Our Representative our Proxy... Democracy vs. Republic

The United States of America is not a true Democracy, it is a Republic.  The distinction between the two is quite clear and the reasons for making the USA such show themselves every day in the numbness of the people.  The writers of the Constitution, mainly James Madison, were quite aware that pure democracies do not work; they sought to protect the minority from the majority. The ancient City-State Athens (Ancient Greece) is the primary example.

In Athens, the philosopher Socrates was sentenced to death by the majority of citizens in a trial concerning his “impunity” and “corruption of the youth.” He more a scape goat following a terrible loss during the Peloponnesian War.

In the United States we elect representatives because the citizens simply do not have the time to be completely engulfed in politics. It is feasibly impossible to work full-time and keep up to date with all the political nuances that happen on a daily basis. Our representatives, on the other hand, have a full time job understanding every area of the political spectrum.

So the next time you think you have the time and the knowledge to understand everything thats happening now, you don’t!

Oh the US of A..
